The Risks of Drinking Pure Lemon Juice

Consuming pure, undiluted lemon juice is generally not recommended as a daily beverage. The high concentration of citric acid can irritate the esophageal lining and exacerbate conditions like acid reflux, GERD, or heartburn. For those with sensitive stomachs or existing ulcers, taking “shots” of pure lemon juice can cause immediate discomfort and inflammation. Save the pure juice for culinary applications where it will be mixed with other foods.

The Sweet Spot: Proper Dilution

Dilution is the key to reaping the benefits of lemon juice safely. Mixing the juice of half a lemon into 8 to 12 ounces of water brings the pH level closer to neutral, making it much gentler on your stomach and esophagus. The water acts as a buffer, while still delivering the vitamin C, enzymes, and hydration your body craves. Warm water is often preferred in the morning, as it is less shocking to the system than ice-cold water.

Timing Matters

If you’re drinking diluted lemon water, doing it on an empty stomach maximizes the absorption of its nutrients and stimulates digestive enzymes. However, if you find even diluted lemon water irritating first thing in the morning, try drinking it during or after a meal. The presence of food in your stomach will further buffer the acidity.

Everyone’s digestive system is different. Some people can handle stronger concentrations of lemon juice, while others need it heavily diluted. Start with a quarter of a lemon in a large glass of water and see how you feel.
